Let NOVA introduce you to the world of glacial ice climbing. No experience necessary! The Matanuska Glacier, the massive valley glacier just 100 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska, has easily accessible shallow ice cliffs suitable for introductory ice climbing. This is strictly an introductory with no steep walls and low heights of 50+ feet.
For the more adventurous glacier hikers try this longer hike. No experience is necessary but you must be able to walk at least 5 miles comfortably to enjoy this trek. This adventure takes hikers out past the “Ice Falls” area to the heart of the Matanuska Glacier beyond the more frequented areas. With a guide to client ratio of 1:4, this trek is highly customized to the group’s physical capabilities.
