Driving in Alaska

Rent a Car vs. Rent an RV

For your trip you may be debating between a rental car or an RV. A rental car is great for those that prefer to stay in cabins or hotels and have a set itinerary, or who may be traveling with a larger group.

An RV can give you more flexibility and amenities, but also comes with a learning curve. You’ll get to learn how to use an RV and you may have to drive a bit slower, but you can camp in so many locations and have more say in your trip. You can learn more about renting an RV for Alaska here!

Do You Need 4×4?

4×4 isn’t always necessary to get around Alaska, but it does open up your options to travel on some really scenic roads! Some roads, like the summit road that leads from Hatcher Pass to Talkeetna, are gravel and 4×4 is more suitable.

4×4 is a must have in the winter months to help you drive in snowy or icy conditions.

Keep Construction in Mind

Especially in the Summer months, construction can cause delays when driving. With only 3-4 months to get all the road construction done, the state is very busy in the Summer!

Construction can slow your travel so keep that in mind as you plan your travel. You can see which roads are under construction here.
