Alaska glacier treks / hikes and ice climbing! Explore the amazing world of the Matanuska Glacier!
NOVA offers 3 hour guided Alaska glacier hiking tours or 5 hour introductory ice climbing on the Matanuska Glacier, the largest road accessible glacier in Alaska at 4 miles wide by 26 miles long. An unforgettable Alaska adventure, our guided glacier hikes / treks trips offer an up-close encounter with these awesome ice formations. What makes this glacier so special for this kind of activity? The easily accessible terminal face is not abrupt, and the frontal ice formations have many safe routes with spectacular views of crevasses, seracs - ice falls, moulins, caves and surface ponds. This is why the Matanuska Glacier is used extensively for instruction in ice climbing, mountaineering; including cinematography for advertisements and movies.
No experience necessary! We pioneered these glacier tour adventures 20 years ago and have implemented equipment changes and guiding protocols to enhance our clients experiences while exploring this glacier. Since clients come with a variety of ages, physical abilities and expectations, we group folks based on these categories and tailor these trips to the group. Our low, client to guide ratio, helps match similar abilities and desires and allows the guides to customize routes and physical exposure so everyone gets the most out of their adventure.
All you need is a sense of adventure, some suggested personal clothing and snacks. We provide hiking boots for those who need them; crampons, helmets, all glacier hardware.
Combine this glacier trip with a Matanuska River whitewater raft trip, Lion Head or the Lion Head Evening, for a full days outing at a discounted price and save $20.00 per person.
I took a trip down the Matanuska River with you when I lived in Anchorage in the early 80’s. After moving back last year and taking a trip with you that summer, I’ve since made four more with NOVA this year. I find your trips to be an excellent way to initiate my visitors to the wonders and joys of Alaska. I want to reiterate my thanks and appreciation to everyone on your staff, from those in the office at Chickaloon to the professional and personable guides insuring a bitchin’ time on the river. I can assure I will be going again.
Sincerely, Dale Hoffman, Alaska
